Diabetes
Irving ISD partners closely with families to support students with diabetes while at school. Parents are encouraged to communicate early with the school nurse—ideally before the school year begins or upon enrollment—to review their child’s individual health needs.
Students receiving diabetes care at school must have current medical forms on file, including a Diabetes Medical Management Plan (DMMP) signed by the student’s healthcare provider, along with required medication authorization forms. Parents are responsible for providing all necessary diabetes supplies, medications, and food for their child during the school day.
Texas law allows schools to train designated staff members, called Unlicensed Diabetes Care Assistants (UDCAs), to help care for students with diabetes if the school nurse is unavailable. Each Irving ISD campus has trained staff who can assist with diabetes management tasks, including administering insulin and emergency medications such as glucagon, following the student’s medical plan.
Through collaboration, planning, and trained personnel, Irving ISD works to ensure students with diabetes are safe, supported, and able to fully participate in their educational experience.
