Spinal
Spinal screening in Irving ISD is conducted in accordance with Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) guidelines to help identify possible abnormal spinal curvatures, such as scoliosis, during periods of rapid growth. In Texas, spinal screenings are required for students in 5th and 7th grade for Girls and 8th grade for Boys.
Screenings are performed by trained and certified personnel using a visual observation method, most commonly the Adams Forward Bend Test. During the screening, the student bends forward at the waist while the screener observes the alignment and symmetry of the spine, shoulders, and back. This process is quick, noninvasive, and conducted with respect for student privacy. Spinal screening does not diagnose a condition; instead, it identifies students who may need further evaluation by a healthcare provider. Early detection supports timely medical follow-up and helps prevent potential long-term complications that could impact a student’s health and learning.
