For 31 years, Irving ISD has forged community partnerships that allow businesses and local groups to share knowledge and resources with our schools. Irving ISD celebrated the generous contributions of those Partners in Education with a special reception on Monday, April 17, 2017. Whether its mentoring, in-kind and cash donations, classroom/career day speakers, field trips, internships, event judging, tutoring, we are grateful for the benevolence of our partners.
At the event, Irving ISD honored two partners with the Golden Apple Award. This recognition is the highest honor the school district bestows upon a Partner in Education and an individual volunteer for outstanding contributions to Irving ISD students and schools. Congratulations to this year’s recipients – Lupita Padilla (individual partner) and the Irving Family YMCA (partner organization)!
Superintendent Jose L. Parra, Ed.D. and Assistant Director of Communications Valerie Reyes-Braun presented the Golden Apple awards to Padilla and to Tanya Bealer and John Munoz of the YMCA at Monday’s event.
Lupita invests 20 to 30 hours a week volunteering in our schools, namely Pierce Early Childhood, Good Elementary and Austin Middle schools. She prepares materials and provides face painting, balloon art, clown performances at school events; offers face painting and balloon art classes for parents; is a career day presenter; provides food for teacher appreciation days; is a HIPPY class presenter; and participated in many parent education opportunities. She was also instrumental in opening the first parent center at an early childhood campus. In addition, she is an AVANCE reading club leader, is involved in the Hispanic Clown Association, and she assists with events at the Irving Public Library East, St. Luke’s Catholic Church and Children’s Hospital.
The Irving Family YMCA has offered after-school programming at several Irving ISD schools since 1989. The organization is a key coordinator for the annual Supplies for Success school supply drive for Irving ISD students, the annual baccalaureate ceremony for graduating seniors, and they provide “Play and Learn” classes for parents and discounts for employees. The Irving Family YMCA partners with the district for the free Summer Meals Program, the Adult Education & Language Program and the Irving Kid’s Charity Golf Classic (of which funds raised go to Irving ISD students/staff, programs, grants). They also support our Teacher of the Year with gifts to the district-level honorees, and they offer programs such as water safety lessons at apartment pools, sports teams for disabled children and tutoring for young children and struggling high school students.
We are so grateful for the ways all of our volunteer enhance our schools and programs!
