What is mentoring?

Mentoring is a caring adult helping a young person understand the value of education, helping them achieve familiarity with the world of work, helping them resolve problems, and helping them work to accomplish their social and academic goals by sharing their life experiences. A mentor can help a young person broaden his or her horizons by simply listening to them and affirming all that is positive in the world around them.


How often should a mentor meet with their mentee?

In order to get to know one another and create a strong foundation for the mentoring relationship, we recommend that you meet with your mentee once a week, however, other arrangements may be acceptable.  Your Campus Mentoring Program Coordinator/Liaison will can give you more specific information about a mentoring schedule.


Can I meet with my mentee after school or on weekends?

No, our mentoring program is a school based program.  The only contact you can have with the student is at the student's campus during your designated mentoring time.


Can I email or text my mentee?

No, you should not exchange email addresses or phone numbers with your mentee.  Remember our mentoring program is a school based program, so all contact with your mentee should be during your designated mentoring time. 


Can I mentor more than one student?

Initially, we would like the mentor to begin with one mentee.  A mentor may request additional students once he/she has become comfortable with the schedule/routine.  Special consideration may be given on a campus by campus basis.

 

What if the mentoring relationship doesn't seem to be working?

It's important to identify any difficulties with the mentoring relationship as early as possible.  Then discuss these difficulties with the Campus Mentoring Liaison and try to resolve them with open, honest and respectful communication. The Campus Mentoring Liaisons are available to offer guidance and support to mentors and mentees as needed.

 

    • If it is determined that the chemistry between mentor and mentee is not working, then arrangements will be made to assign the mentor another mentee and the mentee another mentor. 
       

    • One of the key elements of a healthy mentoring relationship is the establishment of trust and mutual respect. In order to foster this, please aim to be reliable and punctual for meeting arrangements and give reasonable notice if you need to change an arrangement.

 

How do I become a mentor?

There are several ways to become a mentor.  You can contact a campus directly and ask to speak with their Campus Mentoring Program Coordinator/Liaison, apply on our website, or email the District Mentoring Liaison at IrvingISDMentoring@irvingisd.net. You will need to complete the mentor application, answer a few questions, and authorize a criminal background check.  Once approved, you will be contacted by the campus for an orientation of the mentoring program.
